The EU '3D-Icons' project aims to create highly accurate 3D models and a range of other materials (images, texts and videos) of iconic and internationally important monuments and buildings across Europe and to provide access to this data on line.

Over 130 monuments and buildings from Ireland, including decorated high crosses, the island monastery of Skellig Michael, the passage tombs of Knowth and Newgrange, and the ceremonial landscape of Tara are featured in this digital collection. In addition to making content available on line, this data has the potential to be of benefit to such sectors as education, tourism, the creative economy, conservation and monitoring of cultural heritage sites.

The site will continually be updated with new sites and functionality to enhance your experience.

Tá sé mar aidhm ag an togra Eorpach 'Íomhánna 3D' samhaltáin fíor-bheacht 3D agus réimse ábhair eile (macasamhail, téacsanna agus físeáin) a chruthú d'fhoirgintí agus séadchomharthaí íocónacha ar fud na hEorpa a bhfuil clú idirnáisiúnta ortha. Ina theannta sin, cuirfear an bailiúcháin digiteach seo ar fáil mar rochtain foinse oscailte.

I measc na 130 foirgintí agus séadchomharthaí as Éirinn a chuirfear ar fáil sa bhailiúchán seo, beidh ardchrosa mhaisithe, an mhainistir oileánach Sceilg Mhichíl, tuamaí pasáiste Chnóbha agus Sí an Bhrú agus tírdhreach deasghnách na Teamhrach.

Chomh maith leis an ábhar seo a chur ar fáil ar líne, beidh earnálacha oideachais, turasóireachta, tionscail cruthaitheachta, caomhnaithe agus monatóireachta suíomhanna oidhreacht chultúrtha in ann tairbhe a bhaint as an bhfoinse seo.

Leanfar ag cur leis na séadchomharthaí agus le feidhmiúlacht an suímh seo chun d’eispéiseas a shaibhriú.

  • Data Capture

In recent years the development of technologies and techniques for the surface data capture of three-dimensional artefacts and monuments has allowed both geometrical and structural information to be documented. Several approaches have been developed,...

  • Modelling

3D post-processing is a complex procedure consisting of a sequence of processing steps that result in the direct improvement of acquired 3D data (by laser scanning, photogrammetry), and its transformation into visually enriched (and in some cases sem...

The core objective of 3Dicons.ie was to make 3D models available online. The solution selected is this case, the Sketchfab webGL viewer, was one of a range of different methodologies and technical solutions for the optimal delivery and display of rich and complex 3D assets online.

When evaluating publication formats the selection needs to consider the wide range in potential users from the general public to the researcher.

Bishop’s Gate was one of the four original entrances to the city. The current gate was erected in 1789 in commemoration of the 1689 siege. In 1789 the present gate was erected in a triumphal arch style to celebrate the centenary of the ‘Shutting of the Gates’. The gate is constructed from buff ashlar sandstone and has a central semi-circular-arched vehicular opening flanked by two flat-arched pedestrian passages.

Free standing sandstone cross, dating to mid-ninth century, consisting of head of one cross and shaft of another, with stepped stone base. South-west face of shaft bears iconography depicting 'Daniel in the Lions' Den' at top of shaft with immediately below it 'The Sacrifice of Isaac' and below that 'Adam and Eve/The Fall of Man'. North-west face of shaft bears 'The Adoration of the Magi', 'The Wedding at Cana' and 'The Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes'. Beaded decoration runs up sides of the two faces and also around distinctive collar at top of shaft. Head of cross, which was added at much later date, has crucifixion scene with unidentified scene below it on north-west side. At centre of south-west of head is another depiction of 'Daniel in the Lions' Den', with 'Cain slaying Abel' to left and possibly 'Pilate washing his hands' to right. East and west sides of cross have bosses and interlaced decoration. Cross stands to height of 4.57m, on stepped stone-built platform with wrought-iron railings having barley-sugar twisted square pillars to four corners and arrow-topped balusters between with lower rail resting on turned cast-iron feet around entire monument.

The 3D models on this website are the end result of a complex pipeline of processes which transform the primary data captured by the surveyor. The different elements of this pipeline – including capture techniques, processing, and publishing - are described in this section.
