South-Cross-perspective-view-1 intro

SMR No.: OF005-016----

Monument Type: Cross - High cross

A ringed sandstone cross about 12 feet (3.7m) high, the South Cross is covered mostly with abstract ornament in the form of interlacing, fretwork, spirals and bosses. It has a Crucifixion scene in low relief unusually placed on thewest face of the shaft rather than the cross-head itself. There are worn depictions of humans and animals on the base. In style it appears to date from the mid 9th century.
